The Struggle

For most of my life I have been a basketball person. NBA and college hoops. But over the last few years I just.... don't care about basketball anymore. I no longer enjoy playing it, watching it, or following it. I couldn't even get interested in this year's NCAA Tournament. I've come to the realization I no longer care one bit about the sport.

In the absence of basketball, and since the NFL only runs through February, I have been sorely lacking a sports fix during spring and summer. It finally dawned on me I should get into baseball. For the last few years I have been playing more baseball video games, which were good, but I finally took the brave manly steps to the next level of fandom; actually watching a real baseball game. It dawned on me that my years of playing baseball video games and listening to sports podcasts has actually prepped me with more baseball knowledge than I realized I had. So far this season I am having a blast watching games and following trades and stats.

Considering I live in New York, I decided the Mets were the logical choice for my casual fandom. I am playing with them as my franchise in my PS3 game, and aside from a horribly misguided $25 million I threw at free agent Manny Ramirez which turned bad very fast, the seasons is going pretty well. Melissa hates the game and says its the most boring video game I have ever played. She might have a point, most games consist of me lining out to the short stop 25 times and cursing profusely at my horrible bullpen as they throw wild stuff all over the plate.

My goal is to attend a Mets game some time this summer. Both the Yankees and Mets are playing in new ballparks this year, and they look pretty awesome. If all goes as planned, I should be sitting in some nose bleed seats at Citi Field sometime in August watching the Mets close out another choke-job season.

Dare to dream.

You would not be a true "new yorker" if you did not cheer for one of the teams. Besides, the hot dogs may be very good!
