The Wire

Melissa and I have been watching The Wire for the last month or so. It is a cop-drama that ran from 2002-2007. The show chronicles two sides of Baltimore, the police bureaucracy and the drug trade.

This show is incredible, in large part due to the freedom the writers and director have by virtue of being on HBO. The show is violent, raw, and does not hold back in displaying the depressing elements of the drug trade. The show is great in large part because it is not on basic cable or network television. There are a ton of characters, each of whom is slowly developed over the seasons. Various plot elements are interwoven across multiple seasons, and it all works together to create some of the most memorable characters I have ever seen on a television show.

It makes me sad to see yet another awesome show that is being shown on premium, paid cable. As network TV continues to get more and more stupid and inane, I think I might have to break down and eventually get HBO. Between The Wire, The Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Flight of the Conchords, it seems like HBO / Showtime is where a lot of the higher quality television is migrating to.

I hear ya. I am totally addicted to True Blood now. Such good writing and acting. Really fantastic. We have never had a movie channel in our life but I might just have to break down and get HBO. I would really love to watch Rome and The Tudors also.
