The Horror...

Over the weekend, as I tried to digest the news that John McCain has chosen Sarah Palin as his running mate, I couldn't help but feel sad for Mitt Romney, and also a bit disgusted at the complete train-wreck that is the current state of the Republican party.

The fact that Republicans would rather choose a scandal-ridden, low experience, and essentially side-show selection over someone because they are Mormon is truly sickening. I am also disgusted that so many LDS people voraciously self-identify as Republicans, a political party of which 25% of its members recently said they would probably not vote for a Mormon President, solely because they were Mormon.

So, essentially because of Romney's religion, he neither secured the nomination, nor was selected as McCain's Vice President.

Instead we have Sarah Palin, who at this point is shaping up to be a disastrous sideshow of epic proportions. Here are a few tidbits of info which we have learned about her. If this is what we know after four days, it will probably get worse from here.

- Sarah Palin was a member of the Alaskan Independent Party before becoming Republican. AIP's primary goal is to secede from the United States. If Barrack Obama had been a member of a group that wanted to secede from the United States, Republicans would be foaming at the mouth with white-hot rage.

- Sarah Palin's 17 year-old daughter is a high-school dropout, 5 months pregnant, and has images of herself & friends plastered all over the internet engaged in gratuitous underage drinking. Once again, if one of Obama's daughters was a pregnant, 17 year-old high school dropout involved in gratuitous underage drinking, Republicans would be foaming with white-hot rage.

- Sarah Palin was recorded on-tape several months ago saying half-seriously that she didn't know what the Vice President's job actually was, and she wondered what the VP 'does all day.' Once again, if either Obama / Biden was recorded making that kind of statement, Republicans would be foaming with white-hot rage.

- Sarah Palin is currently under investigation by the State of Alaska because of allegations that she fired the former Public Safety Commissioner after he refused to fire a state trooper, whom had recently divorced Palin's sister. Again, if Obama or Biden was under investigation for firing public officials who refuse to get involved in their family drama, Republicans would be foaming with white-hot rage.

- When interviewed about a potential Vice Presidency nomination several months ago, she said that if selected one of her primary goals as Vice President would be to "make sure that VP slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaska." Once again, if Obama / Biden, or anybody for that matter said with a straight face that they would only consider a position in the White House if it would first-and-foremost benefit their home state, anybody with a brain would be filled with white-hot rage at that kind of nonsense.

- While mayor of a small town, Mayor Palin tried to force the library to remove certain books because of offensive language, content, etc. She finally relented once advisers got a hold of her and informed her that censoring what books may be in the public library is wildly unconstitutional.

This Vice Presidential selection is in my opinion a train-wreck of epic proportions. Time will tell how it all plays out, but I think I have seen enough.
