I found it odd to read that so many famous people were traveling to Europe to lobby the IOC for Chicago as 2016 host city. Yesterday I listened to an ESPN radio show where each panelist talked about what a financial disaster the Olympics are, and what a waste of money it would be.
Not surprisingly, it turned into a political issue, with people bashing Obama for his involvement, etc. This morning I decided to read-up on this issue, and to my amazement, apparently the United States is the only country that has managed to actually turn a profit on the Olympics.
Both China and Greece lost huge sums of money by hosting the Summer Olympics; and it looks like London will do the same. But historically, the Los Angeles Games (84), Atlanta (96), and Salt Lake City (02), all turned a net profit. So in fact, when people say that the Olympics in Chicago is a bad financial idea; it turns out they are either misinformed, or just flat-out lying. The United States is the only country that manages to turn a profit on the Olympics. So to that I say, go Chicago!!

fascinating! I'm hoping I can actually go to the olympics some time in my life. How cool would that be!
Too bad Eugene.
