My new favorite thing is attempting to condense the entirety of my daily information consumption into as streamlined a process as possible. To this end, I recently discovered Google Reader and the awesomeness of RSS Feeds.
Basically, here's the idea; an RSS feed is a simplified stream of frequently updated web content. So instead of manually surfing on my computer throughout the day to various news sites, blogs, the Onion, video game or sport sites, etc., I instead subscribe to the RSS feeds of all of these various sites and have them sent directly to my RSS Feed on Google Reader. I then create folders to categorize this incoming information, and as information / news comes in from my various feeds, they are slotted accordingly into the appropriate folder. Then when I check Google Reader, it simply tells me I have x number of new updates in each folder. Currently I have the following five folders: News, Digg Stories, Entertainment, Blogs, Video Games, and Risk Management / Law.
If you don't want the hassle of navigating Google Reader's somewhat awkward interface, you can install a separate RSS Feed client on your computer or iPhone that makes the presentation and navigation easier. On my iPhone I installed the App Byline, which presents the information in a really nice manner.
Basically, this is the greatest thing ever. You no longer have to manually surf the internet. You decide ahead of time what sites you are interested in, and the information from them all comes to you. Check out this video, you really should get an RSS Reader for your computer / iPhone. There's no going back.
